2025 New Year's Message --Meeting the Expectations of Society to Create Even Greater Trust--

January 16, 2025

Tetsuya Mogi, Chairman and President of JICPA

I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year and express my sincere gratitude for the understanding and support we have received in regard to the JICPA's activities.

Two and a half years have passed since I was appointed chairman. This year we will carry out activities under various themes aimed at realizing our vision of "Contribute to a better future by creating new trust in society," which embodies our tagline of "Building trust, empowering our future."

The first theme is to further improve the quality of audits of listed companies.
Since the roll-out of the Registration System for Auditors that Engage in Audits of Listed Companies and Similar Companies, which was introduced to facilitate the higher levels of discipline required by amendments to the Certified Public Accountants Act within audit firms carrying out audits of listed companies, we have worked to provide these firms with both guidance and support. As a self-regulatory organization, we will continue to meet the expectations of society by monitoring the operational status of the frameworks established by registered firms and their quality control efforts.

The second theme is to contribute to disclosure and assurance in the sustainability field.
Standards for the disclosure and assurance of sustainability information are being developed on a global basis, and even in Japan, important consideration regarding the introduction of sustainability disclosure and assurance systems is underway. We will work to ensure that certified public accountants play an important role in this process and contribute to the establishment of systems by leveraging our accumulated knowledge to actively engage in discussions concerning system design with relevant organizations.

The third theme is to further improve the skills of certified public accountants.
As a result of changes in the external environment, the role that certified public accountants are expected to play is becoming broader, and they are being called to engage in various fields beyond their core area of auditing. JICPA will work to make sure certified public accountants continue to enjoy the trust of society by focusing on initiatives that encourage the ongoing improvement of skills in accordance with changes in the external environment, including in the field of sustainability.

The entire certified public accounting industry will work to gain the trust of the public through audits and then bolster this trust through engagement in various fields beyond auditing. Finally, I would like to wish you all good health and prosperity in the year ahead.
