Ms. Estelita C. Aguirre, President of ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA), talks to JICPA about AFA and its recent activities, as well as the new Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) due to be signed in August.

AFA President Aguirre explains that she is hopeful for the progress to be made in the accountancy system of AFA member bodies, as the implementation of the new MRA will accelerate efforts for closing the gaps in the level of accountancy development in ASEAN and motivate all accountants to upgrade the quality of their practice and keep up with international standards to be globally competitive. 

JICPA hopes to collaborate with AFA and assist emerging professional accountancy organizations in ASEAN region in their endeavors to build sound accountancy systems.

On July 17, 2014, JICPA co-sponsored a symposium to discuss the future of corporate reporting, entitled “Facing the growing need for IFRS application.”

A keynote speech was delivered by Mr. Yuichi Ikeda of the Financial Service Agency (FSA), followed by a panel discussion, featuring Mr. Masayoshi Yoshino, a member of the House of Representatives and a chair of business accounting subcommittee of Liberal Democratic Party; Mr. Atsushi Saito, Director & Representative Executive Officer, Group CEO of the Japan Exchange Group, Inc.; Mr. Noriaki Shimazaki, Advisor of IFRS Foundation Asia-Oceania Office; Mr. Tsuguoki(Aki) Fujinuma, Advisor of JICPA and Professor of Chuo University Business School; and Mr. Kimitaka Mori, Chairman and President of JICPA.

The panel discussion covered topics related to IFRS application in Japan, including initiatives taken so far for the application, advantages and disadvantages and the future of IFRS application in Japan.

On July 9, 2014, the 48th JICPA Annual General Assembly was held at the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. More than 1,100 members and associate members attended the meeting, which was also relayed to other regional chapters of the JICPA nationwide. At the opening, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered a video message, and Mr. Taro Aso, Minister of State for Financial Services, as well as Mr. Atsushi Saito, Director & Representative Executive Officer, Group CEO of the Japan Exchange Group, Inc., presented congratulatory remarks.

Following the report of the results of the 48th fiscal year business plan and budget statements, all assembly agendas were approved. The party held after the assembly was also a success, with total of more than 500 guests, including Diet members and others from various fields.
